Wer zwischen 2014 und 2018 bei den iXS Cups aktiv war, dem ist der Name ‚Silas Grandy‘ garantiert mal in den Ergebnislisten aufgefallen. Zahlreiche Erfolge schmücken seine Karriere, zum Beispiel zwei deutsche Vizemeistertitel und mehrere Podestplätze beim Europacup in der Pro U19 Klasse sowie ein deutscher Vizemeistertitel und ein Sieg in der Gesamtwertung der Eliteklasse des iXS Downhill Cups. Silas ist zwar in Bayern geboren, aufgewachsen ist er jedoch mit seinen Geschwistern bei seiner Mutter an der Algarve in Portugal, wo er 2016 auch sein Abitur absolvierte. Der Downhill-Rennsport spielte dabei schon immer eine große Rolle in seinem Leben. Aufgrund seines Talents fand er schnell in Portugal ein Team. Ganzjährige Trainingsmöglichkeiten in einem südlichen Land, großartige Unterstützung von einem Team und natürlich sein besonderes Talent bildeten das Fundament des Erfolgs von Silas.

„Schon immer war es mein Traum eines Tages Weltcups und in einem professionellen Team zu fahren. Mit 15 habe ich erfolgreiche an meinen ersten iXS Cups teilgenommen, wodurch dann das damalige Gates NICOLAI Team auf mich aufmerksam wurde. Die zwei folgenden Saisons bin ich mit NICOLAI meine ersten Worldcups als Junior gefahren, wobei ich einige Top Ten Platzierungen einfuhr. 2017 bin ich dann dem frisch gegründeten GZ-Racing Team beigetreten, mit dessen Support es dann auch in der Eliteklasse zu Erfolgen kam. Dort gelang es mir den Gesamtsieg des GDC's für mich zu entscheiden.“

Parallel zum Renngeschehen hat Silas mit einem Architekturstudium begonnen. Für die Saison 2020 war er dann dem portugiesischen internationalen Miranda Factory Team beigetreten. Doch dann kam Covid, was für ihn einiges veränderte:

„Durch den Aussnahmezustand und das Ausfallen der ersten Hälfte der Saison gab es viel Zeit, um zu reflektieren und über meine Zukunft nachzudenken. Da Rennfahren von jung an meine größte Leidenschaft war und immer an aller erster Stelle stand, bedeutete dies auch ein stetiges unterbewusstes ‚unter Druck stehen‘. Dass dies mich doch sehr belastete, merkte ich dann erst in der Pause.“

2019 war Silas seine letzte vollständige Saison.

Darüber hinaus führte die Auszeit dazu, dass er über seinen bisherigen Horizont hinausschauen konnte, was seine Neugier für neue Erfahrungen außerhalb des Bikesports wachsen ließ. Daraufinhin fiel der Entschluss, dass dies seine letzte Rennsaison sein würde. Ende des Jahres fuhr er noch die letzten zwei Weltcups mit, wobei er sich bei beiden fürs Finale qualifizierte.

„Aktuell befinde ich mich in Mailand in meinem Auslandssemester. Was das Biken betrifft, bin ich momentan nicht aktiv, vermissen tue ich es aber schon hin und wieder. Der Tag wird sicherlich kommen, an dem ich mir wieder mein Bike schnappe und Gas gebe! Ob ich irgendwann wieder Rennen fahren werde, wird sich noch zeigen. Letztendlich ist es am Wichtigsten, dass man, bei was auch immer man macht, Spaß hat und es aus eigener Überzeugung tut.“

Die pandemiebedingte Pause gab Silas Zeit zum Reflektieren und über seinen bisherigen Horizont zu schauen.

Wir können Silas' Entscheidung vollends nachvollziehen und bedanken uns für seine ehrlichen und interessanten Worte. Für seine Zukunft wünschen wir alles Gute und wer weiß, vielleicht sieht man Silas doch eines Tages nochmal an der Startlinie. Cheers!

Anyone who was active in the iXS Cups between 2014 and 2018 is guaranteed to have noticed the name 'Silas Grandy' in the results lists at some point. Numerous successes decorate his career, for example two German vice champion titles and several podium places at the European Cup in the Pro U19 class as well as a German vice champion title and a victory in the overall standings of the elite class of the iXS Downhill Cup. Although Silas was born in Bavaria, he grew up with his siblings with his mother by the Algarve in Portugal, where he also graduated from high school in 2016. Downhill racing has always played a big role in his life. Due to his talent, he quickly found a team in Portugal. Year-round training opportunities in a southern country, great support from a team and of course his special talent formed the foundation of Silas' success.

"It has always been my dream to ride in World Cups and in a professional team one day. At the age of 15 I successfully participated in my first iXS Cups, which brought me to the attention of the former Gates NICOLAI Team. The following two seasons I rode my first World Cups as a junior with NICOLAI, achieving several top ten finishes. In 2017 I joined the freshly founded GZ-Racing Team, with whose support it then also came to success in the elite class. There I managed to decide the overall victory of the GDC's for me."

Parallel to racing, Silas started studying architecture. He had then joined the Portuguese international Miranda Factory Team for the 2020 season. But then came Covid, which changed things for him:

"By being on the sidelines and missing the first half of the season, there was a lot of time to reflect and think about my future. Since racing was my biggest passion from a young age and always came first, this also meant a constant subconscious 'being under pressure'. I didn't realize that this was putting a lot of strain on me until the break."

2019 was Silas' last full season.

In addition, the time off led him to look beyond his previous horizons, which made his curiosity for new experiences outside of biking grow. As a result, he decided that this would be his last racing season. At the end of the year, he raced in the last two World Cups, qualifying for the finals in both.

"Currently I am in Milan in my semester abroad. As far as biking is concerned, I'm not active at the moment, but I do miss it from time to time. The day will surely come when I grab my bike again and step on the gas! Whether I will race again at some point remains to be seen. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that whatever you do, you have fun and do it out of your own conviction."

The pandemic-related break gave Silas time to reflect and look over his previous horizon.
