Next weekend, Verbier, the famous sports mecca in Switzerland, will be the venue for the grand season finale of the iXS European Downhill Cup. After very hot and exciting races in the previous stages of the series, the race in the Alps is eagerly awaited by the field of riders. Only the weather forecast brings even more excitement.
The challenge
The course in Verbier is known for its length and intensity. With 2,800 metres to race and over 430 metres in depth, the course features sharp bends, open rocky passages and fast forest sections down to the finish in the Swiss canton of Valais. The weather could provide further excitement, as rain and muddy conditions could make the course even more difficult. In addition, the first frost could also take hold of the track at the weekend.
The favourites
The favourites in the Elite Men category include the previous leaders of the Cup, including Switzerland's Yannick BAECHLER (Baechler Brothers), who has already racked up an impressive points lead this season. Just behind Baechler, Rastislav BARANEK (SVK - Kellys Factory Team) and Denis KOHUT (SVK - Osmos Gravity Team) will be doing everything they can to minimise his lead.
American Abigail HOGIE (Beyond Racing) is currently leading the elite women's season by a narrow margin. Swiss rider Delphine BULLIARD (Verbier Racing) will be doing everything she can to overtake Hogie in her home race. Another of Bulliard's compatriots, Lisa BAUMANN (Commencal Les Orres), also has a chance of finishing on the podium.
The last party
One thing is clear, the race in Verbier promises thrilling action and intense battles for the title. For the last time this season, the best downhill riders in Europe will provide thrills on the top course in Verbier. Fans can look forward to an absolute spectacle in the Swiss Alps.
