Season Kick-Off in Morgins
Despite the fact that the World Cup in Fort William is scheduled for the same weekend, more than 350 riders from 18 different nations registered for the first of four races of the iXS Swiss Downhill Cup. The fact that every single one of the iXS series includes participants from all over the world, proves the high status of the different cups in the downhill scene. By the way, the iXS Swiss Downhill Cup already enters its thirteenth season this year and Morgins was among its venues right from the start in 2003.
This year’s start list includes some names that ring a bell. For example the names of last year’s overall winners of the Elite Women category Alba Wunderlin (SUI - Stützrädli), Geraldine Fink (SUI - Biroma Racing Team) und Lea Rutz (SUI - iXS Gravity Union). However, last year’s Elite Men podium in Morgins was entirely French: Nicolas Ortiz (FRA - Rage) rode in first place, Ivan Oziol (FRA - P2V Team) came in second last year and occupied the podium together with another French colleague, who is not yet registered. Let’s see if the Swiss can edge out the French this year…
The weather forecast for the upcoming weekend is positive: temperatures around 20 degrees and mostly dry conditions are nearly perfect for the race on the 3300-meter track with a 500-meter difference in altitude. It’s time for the riders to show how well-disciplined and steadily they prepared and worked out during the off-season. The season has only just begun, so there are no odds-on favourites for 2015 yet. This weekend could definitely get interesting!
